The movie’s strength lies as much in this B plot as in the main storyline. Change isn’t going to come easily for him though, and anxious, socially awkward Todd needs lots of hand holding too. He has no imagination when it comes to running his business, and Izzy tries to shake him from his safe ways. Her connection with others is what makes her attractive and slightly unsettling to her boss, Todd (Matthew MacCaull). Izzy’s a real one, someone who sees Robin struggle and thus tries to hook her up with a contractor who can both redo her floors and take her out to dinner. She also finds a supportive friend in Izzy (Britt Irvin), an associate at the hardware store. Thankfully, Henry’s not the only person who reaches out to Robin. Their deepening friendship draws Carl’s ire, and one can sympathize because he’s probably seen this before and knows how an angel’s good intentions can end in heartbreak. He’s far better with the former as it happens and becomes a sounding board for Robin and a soccer partner for Sophie. Ever the do-gooder though, Henry doesn’t stick to his narrow charge and tries just as hard to mend Robin and Sophie’s personal lives as he does the leaky pipes. His supervisor, Carl (Julian Christopher), who’s sort of mid-management up in Heaven, reminds him to stick to the three golden rules of angel-ing – respect free will, don’t get involved, and avoid using one’s powers. Henry revels in the opportunity to help out while enjoying human pleasures like pizza and yoga. His short time on earth brings about big changes, both for Robin and Sophie and for himself. That person comes in the form of Henry (a very expressive Shawn Roberts), a heavenly handyman out on his first assignment. Seeing her mom’s frustration, daughter Sophie (Lilah Fitzgerald) sends a prayer into the abyss, hoping that someone will provide relief. The film tells the story of Robin (Katharine Isabelle), a divorced mother who moves into a fixer upper but soon finds herself in over her head with repairs. What I found though was a well acted and earnest tale about people doing their best to connect with and support one another. Movies about angels sent to give us humans a helping hand can get real sappy real quick, which is why I wasn’t in a hurry to watch Undercover Angel.
